Daytona State College men's soccer team captured the FCSAA Region 8 Championship in dramatic fashion, edging out Eastern Florida State College 2-1 in a hard-fought battle on Saturday night.
The first half saw both teams locked in a tactical duel, with neither side able to break through despite several promising chances. Eastern Florida narrowly outshot Daytona State 12-10 over the course of the match, but both defenses held firm early on.
The deadlock was finally broken just two minutes into the second half when Eastern Florida forward Joao Loreiro rose above the defense to head home the opening goal, giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
Daytona State responded in the 53rd minute, sophomore forward Lance Talley showcased his creativity, flicking the ball past a defender to set up Daniel Adzah, who calmly slotted the ball into the net to level the score.
Goalkeeper Matthew McCall was instrumental in keeping the Falcons in the game, recording six saves — including a crucial double save that preserved the 1-1 scoreline. His performance proved vital, especially as Eastern Florida pressed for a go-ahead goal.
The decisive moment came in the 64th minute. Midfielder Joachim Kyei played a perfectly timed pass to Adzah, who found himself one-on-one with the Titans' goalkeeper. Adzah rounded the keeper and finished with composure to give Daytona State the lead — and ultimately, the championship. Eastern Florida's keeper made five saves on the night, but couldn't stop the Falcons' second strike.
With the Region 8 title secured, the Falcons now turn their attention to the Southeast District Championship in South Carolina on November 8, where they'll look to continue their postseason run.
